Creating More Affordable Housing

There is not enough affordable and low-income housing in Ward 5 (or in Providence in general). Our current City Council uses their power to give large tax breaks to luxury developers. These tax breaks have taken money away from the city of Providence. We cannot keep giving developers millions of of dollars a year to build luxury housing. We need to end these tax breaks, and make sure that our zoning policy allows for more affordable housing to be built. Everyone deserves to have safe and quality housing.

Fighting for Our Schools

While the City Council cannot end the State takeover of the Providence Public Schools, they can put pressure on the mayor and members of the Statehouse to get the schools back in the hands of the people of Providence. We need to create an elected school committee and make sure that Providence Public Schools are getting the funding that they deserve.

The City Council also has the obligation to get more money from the State. The funding formula disadvantages all of the urban school systems. The City Council should use its power to advocate for the Providence schools and ensure that funding is only used for the public schools.

Making our Government Transparent and Responsive to its People

Every person in our neighborhood should be able to know how decisions are made; however, our current City Council hides how they make their decisions. They also routinely ignore the testimony of Providence and Ward 5 residents. I will always respond to your calls and emails. I will also fight to make decision-making clear. I will make sure to use plain language so that people in the neighborhood can understand complicated, but important city issues.

Prioritizing Public Health

As an epidemiologist, it is important that our city’s government center health in everything that we do. We are facing a number of ever-changing public health crises including the COVID-19 pandemic, and the overdose crisis. As these crises change and evolve, we have to make sure that our policies change and evolve in order to best protect the people of Providence. After all, our health is one of the most precious resources we have.

Fixing Streets and Sidewalks

When I walk around Providence, I see streets and sidewalks that need fixing, and roads that need traffic calming measures (like speedbumps. stop signs, etc.). Having infrastructure that works is essential to having a city that is accessible for all. I want to be able to talk with community members and hold forums where we can envision how our streets should look and work. You deserve to have a City Councilperson who listens to what you need to get around our neighborhood safely.

Creating a safe city for everyone

Every person in Providence should feel safe. Rates of homelessness have more than doubled since the pandemic started and we have seen more gun violence in the past few years. We need to invest in solutions that prevent crime before it begins. This means investing in housing, and behavioral healthcare. It also means that we need to create non-police response options for non-violent crime. Cities have successfully created mobile crisis intervention teams. These have saved cities millions in tax-payer dollars and have gotten people the care that they need. We also need to make sure that there is accountability in policing. We can do this by giving PERA (Providence External Review Authority) and restricting the use of pepper spray and other tactics that can escalate and not de-escalate situations.

Crear viviendas más asequibles

Luchando por nuestras escuelas

Si bien el concejo municipal no puede poner fin a la toma de control de las escuelas públicas de Providence por parte del estado, puede ejercer presión sobre el alcalde y los miembros de la cámara de representantes para que las escuelas vuelvan a estar en manos de la gente de Providence. Cuando camino por Providence, veo calles y aceras que necesitan reparación, y carreteras que necesitan medidas para calmar el tráfico (como límites de velocidad, señales de alto, etc.). Tener una infraestructura que funcione es fundamental para tener una ciudad accesible para todes. Quiero poder hablar con los miembros de la comunidad y organizar foros en los que podamos imaginar cómo deberían verse y funcionar nuestras calles. Usted merece tener a una persona en el Concejo Municipal que escuche lo que necesita para moverse por nuestros vecindarios de manera segura.

Creando una ciudad segura para todas

Toda persona en Providence debe sentirse segura. Las tasas de personas sin hogar se han más que duplicado desde que comenzó la pandemia y hemos visto más violencia armada en los últimos años. Necesitamos invertir en soluciones que prevengan el crimen antes de que comience. Esto significa invertir en vivienda y atención médica conductual. También significa que debemos crear opciones de respuesta no policiales para delitos no violentos. Las ciudades han creado con éxito equipos móviles de intervención de crisis. Estos les han ahorrado a las ciudades millones en dólares de los contribuyentes y han brindado a las personas la atención que necesitan. También debemos asegurarnos de que haya rendición de cuentas en la actuación policial. Podemos hacer esto otorgando PERA (Autoridad de Revisión Externa de Providence) y restringiendo el uso de gas pimienta y otras tácticas que pueden intensificar y no desescalar las situaciones.
